Why the stones matter more than the heater
Here is the mechanism, and it is worth understanding because it drives every practical decision you will make in a sauna.
An electric element or a wood fire heats air quickly, and air holds almost no heat. Stone is the opposite. It takes a long time to heat and it holds an enormous amount of energy relative to its size. A kiuas spends its warm-up period pushing heat into that stone mass, and once the stones are properly saturated, they become a reservoir.
When you ladle water onto them, the water hits rock that is well above boiling and flashes into vapor almost instantly. That is löyly. The stones give up a slug of stored energy, the humidity in the room spikes, and the heat suddenly has weight.
This is why stone mass is the single most useful spec on any kiuas. More stone means a deeper reservoir, which means the room recovers faster between throws and the steam comes out soft and rolling instead of thin and sharp. A heater with a token handful of rocks on top can hit 190°F on the thermometer and still give you disappointing löyly, because there is nothing stored to give.

A note on electric units, because it is the one that catches people out: not every electric heater is designed to have water thrown on it. Most sauna heaters are, but some infrared cabins and a few dry-only units are not, and pouring water on the wrong appliance is a genuine hazard. If there is no ladle and bucket in the room, that is usually the answer, and if you are unsure, ask rather than experiment.
What makes a good sauna stone?
Sauna stones are not decorative gravel. They are dense igneous rock, formed from cooled magma, chosen for low porosity and the ability to survive being heated to several hundred degrees and then hit with cold water over and over.
The two names you will see most often:
- Olivine diabase is the workhorse and the most widely used stone by manufacturers. Part of the reason is unglamorous but clever: its rate of thermal expansion is close to that of electric heating elements, so as everything expands and contracts through heating cycles, the stones are less likely to crush the elements they sit on.
- Peridotite is dense and holds heat exceptionally well, and it is a common choice for people who care a lot about löyly quality.
What you must not use is anything porous, anything with trapped moisture, or river rock you found outdoors. Porous stone can hold water internally, and water turning to steam inside a sealed rock is how stones explode.
Stones are also a consumable. They fracture and crumble over time, which chokes airflow through the pile and degrades löyly. Finns rotate and replace them periodically, and a room whose steam has gone flat for no obvious reason usually has a tired stone pile.
How the kiuas changes what the sauna does to you
This is where the equipment stops being trivia and starts mattering to your body.
A room with a big, properly heated stone mass lets you run real löyly, and löyly is the variable that drives sweat rate far more than the number on the thermometer. Steam collapses the evaporative cooling your skin depends on, so your body answers by sweating harder. A 175°F room with generous löyly will take more out of you than a bone-dry 195°F room that has nothing to give.
More out of you means more fluid and more salt.
